El Jobbo

I met with Chris this morning. He offered me the job, but is going to mail me the paperwork later. The specs are 52k/year, 18-20 days vacay/sick time, 6 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, health care plan yet to be determined, retirement plan is 401k with 5% matching, bonus based on annual review. Money is in the budget for reimbursing travel expenses, conference attendance, professional development, etc.

Things I'm not sure about: Seems like the hours I will work every week will vary. He said he likes to work 8:30-6 everyday, but I'm not sure if that means I will work those hours too. Also I'm not sure if I'm working 40 hours a week or as much as he needs me. Start date is still unknown, probably late February (which is not what I would like). Says I could start earlier, but my health care and retirement might not be in place. Job site is also still to be determined, which is another reason why the start date is unknown. He was looking at sites today--looks like it is going to be in Clayton, because that is a good locale for "wining and dining" prospective clients.

Other: He is going to put me in contact with other researchers working in economic development in the region so I can pick their brains about materials, getting started, etc. He also wants me to learn GIS mapping???! My budget for materials is 40,000, which hopefully will be enough.

So, what do you think?

8:30 to 6 is a really long day! Wow. Like I said before, since it is non-profit and you are salory, they might be leanient with coming and going....
Can't beat the pay and vacation time, thats great!
Plus, you might get a chance to meet some big-wigs for major companies (that is, if you will join in the "wining and dining"). Meeting major players at big companies could give you the opportunity to network and open doors for you in the future.

nutsy has some good comments. I image the days would be somewhat like Josh. When you have a deadline long days maybe some week-ends. Otherwise somewhat flexable. Can't beat the pay and benifits, although I doubt you will be there long enough to worry about IRA and matching contributions. I think when you start he will give you better direction and you can discuss how and when you work. You might be able to start earlier from home. This is an outside the box kind of a position. Results are what matters so be sure you understand the goal and time frame. I think you would be a great assest and also grow to your own potential. After all, what do you have to loose? You can always quit with good notice and I'm sure the office won't have homeless people keeping warm in the chairs!
